Jefferson C. Davis sword

Description: During the first months of the Civil War to honor his military service, the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, presented Davis with a sword. The sword (102 x 12.4 x 3 cm.) has a steel blade engraved on both sides with flower, eagle, and flag designs. The hilt is brass and includes designs of eagles and armament in relief; one side has an attached brass chain (23.5 cm long). The grip is steel with engraved eagle and leaf designs, terminating in a brass helmet with attached brass chain (15 cm. long). The brass guide is engraved, 9877, and fits into the accompanying brass scabbard. Scabbard has brass fitting at the tip, decorated in relief with leaves and acorns. Engraved embellishment sits between the tip and the central brass fitting with ring from which suspends a gold braid (36.5 cm. long) and tassel. An engraved plaque reads, From the Citizens of Indianapolis,/ AUGUST 15th A.D. 1861,/ To COL. JEFF C. DAVIS,/ for his gallantry at Fort Sumpter[sic],/ April 12th A.D. 1861. Final brass fitting has a design in relief of an American eagle on a shield superimposed on a design of flags, a mace, eagle wings, and arrows. This fitting has two attached brass rings. The reverse side of the scabbard is undecorated except for the inscription, MAY THIS SWORD NEVER BE SHEATHED; UNTIL TREASON SHALL BE QUELLED, and the makers engraving, Made by/ Ames Mfg. Co./ Chicopee, Mass.
