Special field orders no. 26, L.M. Dayton, Assistant Adjutant General, headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi

Description: By order of Major General W.T. Sherman, Dayton explains the Military Division of the Mississippis next series of movements into the Carolinas. Major General Howard will occupy Columbia, South Carolina; General Slocum and General Kilpatrick will head towards Alston, South Carolina, to destroy the bridge there; and Colonel Poe, chief engineer, will direct the 1st Regiment of the Michigan Infantry to destroy the railroad from Columbia north to beyond Winnsboro, South Carolina.
