1937 flood, New Albany, Indiana, Spring Street

Description: The Elsby building (constructed 1916) features prominently in this photograph of the 1937 flood in downtown New Albany, Indiana. Water rose to about five feet deep in the city’s business section. The photograph was taken from the Spring Street front of the Floyd County court house with the view to the east toward Pearl Street. At right is the New Albany post office. The top of an automobile can be seen just above the water line in the lower center of the photograph.
