Helen E. Griffin on horseback, ca. 1900

Description: Helen Elizabeth Griffin (1881-1950) poses side saddle on the family horse, Babe. Helen was the sixth child of Patrick and Helen Porter Griffin of Corydon, Indiana. As a young woman she moved to Chicago to pursue a career in art. She married Mark B. OLeary in Chicago in 1906. She was a department head at Marshall Fields and Company, became accomplished at hand painting china, and attended the Chicago Art Institute. Following her husbands death in 1948, Helen returned to Corydon and lived the remaining two years of her life with her siblings Olive, Mary Jane, and Daniel in their childhood home, the Porter-Griffin house, which now is open to the public as an historic site.
