Description: Harry T. Hudson (1877-1961)Grocer Harry T. (“Sam”) Hudson weighs some bananas at his grocery store in Corydon, Indiana. Hudson was in the grocery business in Corydon for about 60 years before his retirement in the mid-1950s. He began working in the grocery business in 1889 around age 12 as an errand boy and later clerk for the W. H. Keller store. He then clerked for several years at the Alex Miller and then R. L. Miller grocery stores in Corydon before purchasing a building on the east side of the square in 1919. He began his grocery business in partnership with first Roy LaHue and then Ora Farish, and in 1925 became the sole owner. Assisting Hudson at his store were Clifford Hurst, George Dannenfelser, and Homer Barrow. Local farmers often sold or traded their eggs and produce at Hudson’s, and for many years the store made home deliveries. Known as a “thoroughly competent and careful businessman,” Hudson also served as the treasurer of the Corydon Chamber of Commerce and was chairman of the local Town Board of Trustees.
