Description: |
Three men add items to a large pile of scrap metal in Corydon, Indiana in 1942. The collection of scrap metal began in July 1942 to gather useful metal for salvage for war production. The drive was sponsored by the Civilian Defense Council with labor for collection furnished through the Works Progress Administration. Three trucks canvased the county daily, going house-to-house collecting scrap iron and other metal. At the time of this photo, one month into the project, the collection had reached 75 tons, with several weeks left to continue. Pictured left to right in the photo are: Victor Pease, George Grut, and David I. Breeden, foreman. |
