Blue River Township Justice Docket, 1882-1889

Description: This docket record book contains the handwritten entries of cases that were brought before justices of the peace in Blue River Township, Harrison County, Indiana, between May 1882 and January 1889. Two men served as justices for Blue River Township during this period: Richard T. Arnold and Philip Feiock. The court cases reflect the daily lives and conflicts of residents during the period and include charges of unpaid debts, detaining or possessing another’s property, provocation, assault and battery, bastardy, and other offenses. The records include names of plaintiffs and defendants, as well as those of witnesses, constables, and any attorneys involved in the case. Some of the surnames that appear are: Arnold, Ash, Bruner, Beck, Barksdale, Dinklaker, Durnill, Feiock, Fouts, Goss, Goldsberry, Harrell, Hancock, Loughmiller, Ott, Radcliff, Rippy, Rinehart, Sieg, Seacat, Voyles, Whitehead, and Zimmerman. An index of plaintiffs’ names appears at the front of the book. Some family relationships can be gleaned from the entries, and a few cases concern the settling of estates and so can help to narrow down a date of death. In one particular instance, specific details are given. The entry of Lewis Baker vs. Elisabeth Ott provides birth and death dates of her husband, Stewart Ott, as well as his burial information.
