Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Cartoon intended for December 7, 1957, the day after the failed launch attempt of the Vanguard TV3, which would have been the first American satellite to orbit the earth. The launch failed and Vanguard TV3 caught fire. A cartoon referring to the disaster appeared in the newspaper instead. In the unused cartoon, Uncle Sam stands in the foreground of the cartoon with his back to the viewer and his arms out. He is standing on a beach. Huge numbers 4 and 7 stand on the waters edge. The 4 stands for July 4, 1776. The 7 stands for December 7, 1957, the day the cartoon was intended to run and the 16th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. In the sky between the two numbers, the Vanguard TV3 satellite (an orb with 6 antennae) pops out of its rocket. The body of the rocket is labeled December 6. Across the ocean, a line of people have gathered to watch the launch. The differences in their clothing indicate that they have come from all over the world. Khrushchev is identifiable; he is surprised that the Vanguard doesnt make a beeping noise like Sputnik.
Uncle Sam (Symbolic Character); Khrushchev, Nikita Sergeevich, 1894-1971
