Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Cartoon about the marathon tag-team filibuster conducted by Southern Democrats in an attempt to prevent passage of the 1960 Civil Rights Act. The filibuster lasted a total of 125 hours and 31 minutes, during which the Senate was continuously in session. A cot with a nightstand next to it occupies the foreground of the cartoon. It is unmade, as if the person sleeping in it has just gotten up. Another cot is visible in the background, this one with a man sleeping in it. Another man sleeps in a chair near the cot. At the top of the cartoon there are two swinging doors. One is open, revealing rows of desks and a man speaking inside the Senate chamber. A sign on the closed door says U.S. Senate--Members Only.
