Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: A globe is hanging and a spotlight is shining on it. Uncle Sam is behind the globe. Father Time is holding baby 1950, and a man says His second day already, but it is unclear whether he is referring to 1950 or the man who is holding suitcases in front of a cartoonists work station. Knechts elephant informs the reader about the debate between mathematicians about whether 1950 was the 50th year for the 1900s.

Happy new year! 1950 his second day already! Last of the 1900s. Did the first half of the century really end Dec. 31, 1949 - or will it end Dec. 31, 1950? Some mathematicians dont agree. The dispute was there a year 0 or no. From some figuring 0 to 1 is one - to 49 end would be 49 not 50! but the library of Congress says 1949 ends first 50 years - regardless.
