Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Cartoon promoting a return to a system of foot police. The edges show scenes of different types of crime, which have increased without policemen walking beats throughout the city. In the center there is an illustration of a police officer from the waist down, walking and swinging a club. Text at the bottom says that crime rates were reduced in Boston by returning to this system.

The almost nightly holdups! Juveniles in all kinds of crimes. Saloon. Hoodlums, bums, crooks, street loafers. Come on kid--for a ride. Purse snatching, assaults, etc. Fights--even murder, etc. Vandalism in homes, schools, churches, business places, parks, etc. Burglars. Robberies. By a back to a system of foot police. Walking beats in business, residential, wholesale, and manufacturing districts. Boston police in more than a years trial cut all types of crime by large percentage. But of course--to still have some radio-cruising-auto officers. [in margins: Courier January 20, 1954. To Kirby Stevens--best wishes--Karl Knecht. 1954. 1/20/54]
