Description: |
British Prime Minister Attlee leans out of a window and tells a crowd of people in India that they have the right to full independence from Britain if they choose. John Bull, who is standing behind Attlee reading a newspaper about a talk given in the U.S. by former Prime Minister Churchill, is shocked at Attlees words. The representative crowd of Indians includes a woman balancing a pot on her head, a man with a gun, Gandhi, a man wearing a turban and ornate clothing, a naked child, a snake charmer, and a man lying on a bed of nails, as well as an ox, goat, cobra, and elephant. Most of them are surprised as well, except Gandhi, who stands with his back to Attlee and his head turned to look at him. Gandhi does not appear to trust Attlees words. Knechts elephant appears with St. Patrick in the bottom right corner. Attlee, C. R. (Clement Richard), 1883-1967; John Bull (Symbolic Character); Gandhi, Mahatma, 1869-1948; Patrick, Saint, 393?-463?
