Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: A crowd of people gather around a wall to look at four abstract works of art which are hanging there. The people voice their opinions of the works, all of which are negative and range from considering the paintings a waste of canvas to wondering where the real paintings that occupied the spot previously have gone. A young girl shows her father a painting she did in kindergarten, which looks exactly like the painting that won first prize in the exhibition.

What is it? Sure the state hospital didnt enter some? No wonder museums and art exhibits have a hard time to get folk interested. Who could judge such? Are they kidding us? You mean it won first prize! Money for that? Do they teach such? Adoration. 9. Emotion. 7. If theyd have different classes--oil, watercolor, etc. as well as subjects--with such tripe by itself--Id enter. What became of all those fine, old, real paintings that used to hang here? Isnt it too, too divine. Imagine--wasting canvas, paint, time, etc., and framing it! Looks like a fiasco, You mean Piasco? You havent seen anything till you see the modern sculptor. Grand first prize. Devotion. Look at it this way its the same as no. 9 hung sideways. 3. 4. ...ation. No matter how you hang them--upside-down or sideways, its still the same. Oh! My dear--let mister Bugg see it. Look Daddy I did it when in kindergarten. [in margins: Emotion. Devotion. Musty Mill. For 11/17-49.]
