Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Top: A man sits in a chair reading a newspaper whose headline discusses the number of Americans lost (killed, injured, missing, and taken prisoner) so far in the war. He turns in surprise as Death whispers in his ear that 5 times as many were killed and wounded in various accidents during the same time period. Bottom left: A man slips and falls on an icy sidewalk; a text box asks why city ordinances requiring people to clear their walks are not being enforced. Center right: Two tires complain about people who let them freeze in the slush and shovel snow into the street gutters so that it freezes on tires. Bottom right: Torn bags of garbage lie on the sidewalk; a dog roots around in one of them. A text box says that the city is failing to collect garbage regularly.

U.S. Losses First Year of War 58,307 including dead (around 8,000), wounded, missing, and prisoners. These include the Philippine Scouts. Psst! But you had 5 times those figures this year in various accidents with 460,000 man-days lost account said accidents. Talk about war casualties. Why isnt the city ordinance on cleaning snow and ice off walks enforced? My owner lets me set out and my tires freeze into the slush and imagine the tear when Im yanked out--. And look--those who do clean walks--please shovel it in yard not street at curb where when frozen is hard on tires. With the city failing to collect garbage regularly there are some folk whose garbage pails are full, who take their garbage and throw it in nearby yards. You about it Board of Health? [in margins: Philippines. 89. Courier 3 columns 12/8/42.]
