Description: |
Knecht travels by train through the Northwest region in the middle of winter. Snow fences used in the West and closer to Evansville. A railroad worker stands near the track. A track walker makes sure the track is clear. A train is stopped by an avalanche on the tracks. Snow sheds keep the tracks clear. Extensive system of tunnels. Image Access WideTEK 25 [in margin: As the Cartoonist Travels in Midwinter in the Far Northwest. By Karl Kae Knecht. 1939.] Guarding against winter snows...unlike the occasional thin slatted snow fences seen in near North. Those in far North and Northwest are heavier material--longer and more frequent--on the prairies especially where a tree is so seldom seen. They take every precaution at all times. Youll find a community of railroad workers and families at strategic points. Just a switch--at least some one all the time. Cascade Tunnel on Great Northern in Washington straight line 7.7 miles. Noted, no few Chinese section crews... Oil burner engines. The track-walkers and section crews always on alert--for occasionally a snow or rock slide will hold up a train till cleared away. Just a few hours. Not to forget huge snow plows. Snow sheds. You run along, cross Kicking Horse River. Also the auto highway is seen. Tunnels--the famous spiral tunnels near Field, B.C., in Canada, in the Rockies...Route through mountains. The railroad in the open. Before built in 1908 the 4.5 grade took 4 engines to a train. The one under Cathedral Mountain is 3,206 feet long. The other under Mount Ogden is 2,890 feet. Now 2 engines. The first tunnel passes under itself and comes out 54 feet lower. |
