Tom Nast as a boy saw a tiger head painted on the fire engine no. 6 near his home in New York. Bill Tweed was then chief of old no. 6. Later Nast, the man and cartoonist, emblazoned the tiger as a cartoon symbol on Tammany of which tweed was then big boss. It first appeared in 1871 in Harpers Weekly attacking Boss Tweed. Nast also created the the elephant for republican symbol and donkey for the democrats. |
