Merritts Chicken Dinners started in 1939 on Sundays by appointment only. On the business card: MERRITTS CHICKEN DINNERS; Nine Miles West of Indianapolis on West Tenth Street Road, A BIG DINNER SERVED COUNTRY STYLE; Make Reservations; PHONE: Danville 660-2. According to Barbara Stauch, Since we had the big house, it was our custom to fill it. We served Merritt’s Chicken Dinners from 1939 to 1950. It wasn’t a restaurant, it was in our home and we only served on Sunday. Local people didn’t eat there, people from out of town would. It began with “invitation only” and went to “reservation only.” |
