May L. Merritt (July 15, 1878 – May 17, 1946) was a school teacher and taught in Connersville. According to Barbara Stauch, her neice, There was always a “sitting/bed” room for her at Grandfather’s house. She never married, but dated seriously well into her sixties. She was an elegant woman and my sister and I would love to have her show us her jewels. Aunt May was one of the first women to own and drive a car.May Merritt is the daughter of William R. Merritt (September 19, 1850 - June 22, 1939) and Abigail Shipman (February 10, 1853 - May 16, 1930) who were married on September 2, 1872. Their children include: Bertha Estelle Merritt (December 20 1874 - October 21, 1943), May Merritt (July 15, 1878 - May 17, 1946), Infant Son (October 5, 1880 - October 5, 1880), Grace Merritt (March 16, 1887 - May 17, 1892) and William George Merritt Sr. (January 12, 1896 - December 10, 1966). |
