The Second Jail, Indianapolis IN: the first jail was competed in 1824. The square of ground selected for a courthouse and jail was covered with heavy timber. A jail made of hewn logs was erected and remained as the bastille of Marion County until 1833 when it was destroyed by fire set by a prisoner. It was succeeded by a brick jail in the north half of the Court House Square, one end abutting directly upon Alabama Street. The jailer then was provided with rooms for a residence. In 1845 it was enlarged by an addition for prisoners, made of logs a foot thick. Drawing by Christian Schrader.
