Description: The file contains two documents related to the suit the United States brought against Frederick Shoults (Shoultz) for challenging Benjamin Beckes to a duel with pistols. The first document was the recognizance bond for Shoults and the second document was the summons to have Shoultz to appear in Circuit Court. On the twenty-sixth day of December 1813, Frederick Shoults, a captain in the Ranger Service of the United States and Peter Jones acknowledged themselves indebted to the United States. Shoults and Jones both bonded themselves for three hundred dollars. This was to ensure Shoults would appear in the Court of Common Pleas the third Monday in May next to answer to his challenge of Benjamin Beckes to a duel. He pledged in the mean time that he would keep the peace toward Benjamin Beckes and all citizens of the United States of the said Territory. This bond and pledged was taken before Benjamin Parke. On the verso side of this documentRetble Common Pleas May 7, 1814. The second document was a writ for the sheriff to summons Frederick Shoutz (Shoults) and Peter Jones to appear before the judges in the Circuit Court the first Monday of March next to answer to their recognizance entered into the twenty-sixth day of December 1813. The writ was witnessed and signed by Robert Buntin, Clerk CCKC on the eighteenth day of February 1815. On the verso side of the writ, executed in all things herein commanded. James Jordan DSKC. Service $.75, Return $.09 Total $.84. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas/ Circuit Court 1811-1817 page 135, March Term 1815, Frederick Shoults appeared in court to discharge his recognizance - he was discharged.
