Article describes the encounter of 85th Indiana Regiment Colonel John Pierson Baird with two Confederate spies pretending to be two Union soldiers. The men were discovered to be spies, court-martialed and sentenced to an immediate death by hanging. One of the men was a relative of Robert E. Lee. |
