Origin: 2004
Contributor(s): Donated by Mrs. Margaret Gillum. The body was made in 1869 by the mother of Nettie Brown (friend of donor's mother, Mrs. Gillum). From handwritten notes from Margaret Gillum: 'Nellie belonged to Miss. Nettie Brown, a lfe long friend of Mother's who lived at the corner of Fruitridge and Hulman Street, where the Blumberg's live now. Mrs. Brown made the body and dressed the doll when Miss Nettie was four years old, so she dates back to 1869 about. Mother was born in 1865 and she and Miss Nettie were in school together at the old Sugar Grove School on Hulman just west of Fruitridge Ave. Mother said she remembered as a child often going in to look at Nellie and to admire her. When we were children, Mother took us to see Miss Nettie occasionally and she always got Nellie out for us to hold and admire. At the time she was living at 25th and Hulman - the southwest corner. A year or two before she died she gave Nellie to Margaret Gillum'.
