Description: |
View of a red frock coat which was probably made around 1740 to 1750 with the epaulette added to it later. It was most likely a British officers undress coat or civilian dress coat converted over later to military use. The buttons are not regimental and the coat was probably worn by a gentleman volunteer. It was given to the Vigo County Historical Society museum by E. Sheldon Johonnot who found it handing on a hook in his Aunt Lillian Sanborns attic. The Sanborn family had bought it from New Hampshire when they moved west. It was supposedly given to them by a group of friendly Native Americans who visited their farm. |
