Lamp, carbide

Description: This artifact is a brass carbide lamp used by coal miners in underground mines. Water dripping on the carbide in the lamp produced a gas that went to the lens. To create light the miner then lit the lamp wick. Miners purchased their own carbide for approximately $1.25 for twenty-five pounds of carbide. If a lamp went out during use, the miner had to refill it in the darkness.
