A series of ttributes tto h f ib t t h have made a diff dVALLEYL E SAWA RDSFollowing the death of his wife Laverne on Dec. 21, 1937, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, Terre Haute sporting goods dealer Vernon R. McMillan pondered the creation of a distinctive endowment in her memory. On Oct. 11, 1938, the Terre Haute Public Schools Athletic Board of Control accepted McMillans definitive guidelines to create the Laverne K. McMillan Athletic Award to be given annually to the most outstanding Terre Haute high school athlete as chosen by a secret committee. The first recipient was Paul Sobonya of Garfield High School in 1939. In Sept. 1969--a year after Vern McMillans death--the name of the award was modified to the Vernon R. and Laverne K. McMillan Athletic Award. With the acquiescence of the McMillans two daughters, Martha (Lindner) and Sally (Arthur), the prize was conferred upon two female athletes in 1982.
