This photograph shows the Hayes School, a two room school house that used to be located on Durkees Ferry Road in Fayette township near Tecumseh and New Goshen. I was janitor there the last couple of years it existed. Two of my sisters went there before consolidation. Job was sweeping after school and in cold weather, and making fires in the morning. The boy carries in buckets of coal and corn cobs and you used kerosene on the cobs to get it going. -Betty Alcorn |
