Folder 1334 in Box 20 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds three documents in the 1815 larceny case; United Stated vs. Ned called E. Symmes. Symmes is sometimes given as Simms. Ned is sometimes given as Edward. He is identified as a mulatto and is accused of stealing 16 ½ yards of black and white striped cashmere, about ½ yard wide from John Ewing. The foreman William Polke states the charge to be “A true bill.” There are two summonses in the file. One for Ewing and another for Simms. Symmes appears in other documents as Ned Simms, Ned Sims and Ned Needy. |
