First Capital of Indiana Territory and District of Louisiana

Description: (Back) FIRST CAPITOL OF INDIANA AND DISTRICT OF LOUISIANA, VINCENNES, IND. This building was occupied by the Territorial Government and was situated on the South side of Main Street, and Third Street, midway between Second and Third Street near Harrison Park and used as a residence. In 1919 the Fortnightly Club of Vincennes, through public donations, purchased the building and moved it to its present site in Harrison Park, where it now stands restored to its original condition. The upper floor was the meeting place of the legislative body and the lower was occupied by the Governor and the Secretary of the Territory.
