Records of President Linnaeus HinesIndiana State University ArchivesRecord Group UAR1.2.4Biographical or Historical Information: Linnaeus Neal Hines, fourth president of the Indiana State Normal School,was born on February 12, 1871 in Carthage, Missouri. He grew up and was educated in Noblesville, Indiana. An1894 graduate of Indiana University, Hines taught high school mathematics for seven years in Evansville andIndianapolis. The subsequent eighteen years were spent as superintendent of city schools in Union City, HartfordCity, and Crawfordsville, Indiana. He earned a masters degree from Indiana University 1908. Linnaeus Hines servedin the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1918 until he assumed the position of presidentof the Indiana State Normal School on October 1, 1921. He succeeded president William Wood Parsons to thisoffice. As president of the State Normal School at Terre Haute and its Eastern Division at Muncie, Linnaeus Hinespursued various programs of importance to the growth and development of the institution. He fostereddevelopment of the rural training schools department at each institution, and to further expand the training schoolat Terre Haute and establish one at Muncie. During Hines tenure as president the institution grew to become theIndiana State Teachers College and the Eastern Division was chartered as the Ball State Teachers College in 1929.Strengthening the faculty and academic programs of Indiana State produced accreditation by the North CentralAssociation of Colleges in March, 1930. Linnaeus Hines served Indiana State as president for twelve years,resigning in June of 1933. After his retirement, he continued his service to the college as the institutions Directorof Extension and Placement. Linnaeus Neal Hines died in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 14, 1936.Scope and Contents: The Linnaeus N. Hines Papers are comprised largely of correspondence, with some printedmaterials, reports, and photographs dating from 1921 to 1934. In addition to the papers from the Office of thePresident, there are a few items which date from his term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction and hisyears as Director of Extension and Placement at Indiana State Teachers College.Arrangement: General Correspondence: The series is comprised of incoming and copies of related outgoingcorrespondence from the office of the President. A wide range of materials is contained in the generalseries, including: application letters, job offers, correspondence with faculty, and correspondence dealingwith a myriad of institutional concerns. State Schools: Correspondence with other state institutions has been arranged by school, then bycorrespondent. The series includes materials from the Eastern Division and the Ball State TeachersCollege, Indiana University, and Purdue University. State of Indiana Linnaeus Hines worked closely withstate offices and officials on matters of concern to the Normal School and education in the State ofIndiana in general. This series contains correspondence with state offices and officials. It is arrangedalphabetically by branch, office or department, then by correspondent. Indiana State Normal School: The series is a catch‐all for miscellaneous items dealing with the school. Itincludes Hines statements, speeches, letter of resignation, budget materials, faculty and attendancematerials. Topical arrangements of a previous processor have been placed in this series. These include:junior college, new training school, public relations, and smoke abatement. The series also containsmiscellaneous reports and materials.Processing Information: The collection is not in its original order having been arranged and rearranged at timesprior to this processing.
