the first student admitted to theIndiana State Teachers College when theschool was opened in 1870. Dr. Parsons,after graduation, taught in Tuscola, Illinois for a short time, was superintendentof school at Gosport, and taught in Indianapolis before joining the faculty ofIndiana State Teachers College in 1876.For the next few years he taught English composition, history, and civil government. In 1883 he was elected vice-president of the Indiana State TeachersCollege and in 1885, following the resignation of President Brown was electedpresident, which position he held continuously until Sept. 30, 1921. Duringhis active career many degrees wereconferred upon President Parsons. Indiana University gave him the degreeof Master of Arts while DePauw University and Wabash College conferred uponhim the degree of Doctor of Laws. Dr.Parsons was nationally known as aneducator. For years he was a memberof the State Board of Education andhelped to direct the educational policiesof the state. His counsel and advicewere sought by educational leadersthroughout the nation and his long yearsof service stand unparalled in the historyof the state in which he lived and worked. After retiring from the presidencyof the college on Sept. 30, 1921, Dr.Parsons spent his few remaining yearsat his home, 1444 South Center St. Hewas vigorous and active until within afew months of his death which occurredSept. 28. 1925.Powmer-Hodgkiss, Mrs. Mary B. nr.Sandison, Howard, ha Terre Haute
