Description: X.3sr.>JSk.BASEBALL.The prospects are.good for a baseball record this year. The varsity nineis the same as last years with the exception of Lostutter in center field andFellmy at short. These men, however, played on the summer varsity teamand so do not feel entirely like new material. Bayh and Musselman-did notenter school until a little late but were in for most of the important games. Before the season opened work was begun towards resurfacing ParsonsField and it has since been in excellent shape. The boys expressed theirappreciation of the new conditions by winning the first three games playedat home. Right at the start after losing to Franklin 4 to 8 they defeatedRose Polytechnic 6 to 5. Then they went over to Danville and returnedwith a nice big victory of 17 to 4. Under the leadership of Bayh, who hadbeen elected captain, they next defeated DePauw on Parsons Field 10 to 2and then went over to Greencastle and by an error in the last inning weredefeated by the close score of 3 to 2.While the boys have been making several errors in fielding, they aremaking a splendid batting average. Crim, Heinie, Friedman and Lostutter have especially been batting well and some of the others are not farbehind. Crim has been doing well in the pitchers box with Nichols to helphim out in pinches. Holt is on the receiving end. Heinie and Friedmanare in their old places at third and first. Musselman is on second withFellmy on short. Bayh and Hogue are in left and right field, and Lostutterin the center. If they can only keep up at the pace they have started oldI. S. N. ought to be well up towards the top at the close of the season. The complete schedule and results of games already played is as follows:April212428Mayisn14Place Opp.Franklin, Franklin 4Rose Poly, Par. FieldNever before has interest in this phase of athletics been so great. Why they even had to get a newcoach to show the boys how, since Coach Westphal had his hands full with the baseball men. ProfessorSink, of the Manual Training department, has been coaching the boys and has proven very capablealong this line. A practice meet was arranged with Garfield High School just to show the fellows whatthey were doing. They had only been practicing ab jut a week and not regularly then, so they made avery poor showing. Blake, our fast colored sprint-r, did not run in his usual form, allowing Conoverto win the SO, 100 and 220 yard dashes, but won the 440 yards in good style. Stokesberry heaved theshot 39 feet 11 3-4 inches and Weathers won the running broad jump on 19 feet, 1 3-4 inches.A meet with Rose Polytechnic was held on May 8. A much better showing was made by the boysas Rose won the tneet by only the narrow margin of two points, 49 to 47, and even then on a conditionfor if Coachs protest should be allowed, the meet will be ours by eight points, 52 to 44. Blake, ourcolored sprinter, was the individual star of the meet, winning out in all four events in which he wasentered, the 100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards arid the half mile. Jones and Stoneburner pulled a pleasantlittle surprise by sprinting into first and second places for the mile after Heedwohl of Rose had ledpracticallythe last three laps.Summary.100 yd. dash—First, Blake, N.
