The idea is to have the nomalschools of Indiana and adjoining states forman oratorical league, each State selecting arepresentative for the greater contest. Thematter was taken up too late to be worked outin complete detail, but a successful beginningwas made on the evening of June 11th, withrepresentatives from the Normal School ofOhio University, Athens, Ohio, and the Indiana State Normal School.Ohios contestant was Mr. H. E. Cromer, whospoke on Gustavus Adolphus. Mr. Cromeris an easy speaker, with a clear ringing voice,and in enthusiastic sympathy with his subject.He made a fine impression during his briefvisit.Indianas representative wTas Miss PaulineEdington, who spoke on Wendell Phillips, theReformer. Her oration was a model of clearand concise English, and her delivery was notedfor effectiveness and delicacy. It is doubtfulif the Normal has ever produced a betterspeaker than Miss Edington proved herself tobe. She was given first place by all of thejudges.The judges on thought and composition wereProf. W.
