Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE359Our greatest glory in this term, however, lies in our complete success in oratorical anddebating lines. On May 21, 1909, our VarsityDebating Team, composed of Messrs RaleighSchorling, S. C. Morrill and Oscar Farris, metand defeated the debating team of the IllinoisState Normal University. And our second success came on June 11, 1909, when Miss PaulineEdington, representing I. S. N., won first placein the oratorical contest held in Normal Hall, between I. S. N. and State Normal College ofAthens, Ohio. These two victories have givenI. S. N. a leading place among Normal Schools, and the excellent beginning in this line of workwill undoubtedly lead to an interesting series ofcontests next year. The third important move made this springterm is the change in the constitution of theWomans League, whereby every young womanin the school is required to become a memberwhether she is a member of a section or not. Itis hoped that in this way the general welfare ofall the young women can be more carefullylooked after. Its chief purpose is to bringevery young woman under the jurisdiction ofthe League so that their scholastic life may bemade more pleasant and much more safe, as oneof the main features of the new constitutionis the leasing of a room by the year at one ofthe local hospitals, where young women whobecome ill may go and receive the best of careand medical attention. A new departure fromthe old methods of rooming has been taken bythe Llamarada Section of the League. Theseyoung women have leased a home at 512 NorthSeventh street, where all the members of theSection, who do not have their homes in thecity, board and room, under the strict supervision of a matron and the Dean of Women. This venture so far has proved a great successand it is quite likely that next year will seethe establishment of several Section homes. While our school, as can be easily seen, hasbeen making rapid advancement along all lines,we are sorry to say that our State Legislaturehas failed to realize this. At the last sessionPresident Parsons went before this body andasked for an increase in the maintenance fundand a special appropriation for the erection ofa science and manual training building. However, the Legislature, after dillydallying almost to the time of adjournment, turned downall requests, with the plea of appropriationsmust be cut out for economys sake. Consequently, education has been made to suffer forthe sake of economy. The record of our Legislature on educational appropriations wdien compared with those of Illinois, Wisconsin andseveral other neighboring states, is exceedinglydisappointing, and it is a shame that our educational prowess of which all Indiana is so proudmust give precedence to that of other states, all on account of the lack of foresight upon thepart of our Legislature. For friendship, of itself a holy tie,Is made more sacred by adversity.—Dryden: The Hind and the Panther.
