Description: 356THE NORMAL ADVANCEHistory of the Past YearTO BE APPENDED TO LAST YEARS HISTORYWithout a doubt the past year has been oneof the most prosperous in the history of ourschool. While there have been several disappointing occurrences, yet, all in all, the generaltone of the past year can be best summed upin onward and upward. In order to appreciate our growth properly, it is well to go backto the opening of spring term of 1908, and include it as a part of the year, since muchauthentic, definite data of the present springterm is-difficult to obtain.i The .total attendance of different studentsfor the year, ending September 30, 1908, in theNormal school proper, was 3,048, and in thetraining school, 243, making a total of 3,291,showing a gain over the year ending September30, 1907, of 739 different students, of whom allbut 29 were regular Normal students. Thegreatest attendance in the history, of the schoolwas enrolled in the spring term of 1908, when1851 students were doing work. This greatnumber was partly due to the establishment ofa.mid-spring term course for the benefit of highschool graduates. The purpose of the courseasto give high school students joist graduatingan opportunity to meet the State educationalrequirements in order to teach the followingfall. These students are required to do-fivehours work for twelve weeks, three hours ofwhich must be in subjects of pedagogical nature. The enrollment in this course last springwas over 500.
