THE NORMAL ADVANCE271Class of 1872HOWARD SANDISON, »72Vice President and Head of Department ofPsychology, Indiana State NormalTo The Alumni :—I have been asked to extend to you a greeting. This I am delighted to do. As a member of the class of 1872, I am requested to tender the greeting to that class and, at the sametime, to all of the Alumni, for the reason that, either as studentor as one of the Faculty, I have known personally the members of every graduating class. How great is the difference between the untried and thetried! I greet you as the tried. What a separation there isbetween the new recruit and the veteran! I greet you as veterans. How notable is the distinction between the individualwho has made no mark and the one who has accomplishedsomething great for the world! I greet you as those who haveaccomplished. You have returned from every Indiana county and fromwidely separated climes beyond the State and you make usrich by bringing with you the wealth that jou wrought out, both in the nearby communities and in those that lie far away. Each small neighborhood and each large region in which youhave lived and labored, has given to you its peculiar education, one that has made you rich. Thiswealth you bring with you and unconsciously manifest, as you meet and greet us. I speak ofyour education as wealth because I deem John Knox to have been true to life when he saidEvery scholar adds just so much to the riches of the commonwealth.Sometimes people are inclined to greet one if he comes to establish a factory or build a railroad. Again, one is often greeted with great eclat if he returns from wars pomp and glory.Still again a greeting may be awarded to one who comes clothed with the honors of a high position in the country of those who extend the greeting or as the honored embassador of a foreignnation. But I greet you for something which is in one way greater—for the educational equipment gained both in this school to which you return and in your special work during, the years ofabsence.Such is the greeting I bring you. But there are some things from which you will receive nogreeting:The Assembly Room although more open faced than ever, will extend no greeting in itsformer capacity. That, however, is of no consequence, for in the intervening years you havefound other assembly rooms. The superior look which the members of the Faculty in former days were wont to wear as aproof of worth in the presence of students will utter no greeting, for you return as those whohave performed worthily the worlds work. There is in consequence to be a new look which isintended to betoken comradeship. If, through some illusion, there were, occasionally, adverse criticisms on your Practice Work if, perchance, there were, now and then, in former times, remarks (erroneously made) which mayhave intimated that you were not, upon all occasions, everything which would constitute the ideal |
