THE NORMAL ADVANCE227Swihart of our Faculty were present at themeeting.At the meeting of the Northern General History Teachers Association held in Chicago thelast week in March, Prof. Bogardus was electeda member of the Executive Committee. ThisAssociation is composed of History teachers ofabout eight of the central states, and the meetings are held in Chicago.NORMAL BAND RE-ORGANIZES.The Normal Band was organized at the beginning of the term with twenty members, mostof them being experienced musicians. HowardByrn was elected director, Calvin Griffith,assistant, and Mervin Swango business manager. With a little practice the band has thepromise of being the best Normal has had forseveral years. The following members were enrolled :Howard Byrn, solo cornet, leader CalvinGriffith, solo cornet O. H. Meckley, solo cornet Cobert Jenkins, solo cornet Leslie Childress, first cornet Leo Hopkins, first cornet Peter W. Vitz, second cornet Ernest Wicker-sham, first clarinet Guthrie Wisener, firstclarinet Chas. Shepherd, second clarinet G.B. Hines, second clarinet M. E. Swango, baritone Wiley Hichcock, baritone Clyde Hillis,B-flat bass George Meyer E-flat Bass Jas. F.Mackell, first alto Fane Nugent, second alto Joseph Sergesketter, first tenor Howard Mc-Cracken, second tenor Nelson Van Cleave,snare drum.LOCALMiss Leila Parr, who has recently returnedfrom New York, was a visitor at I. S. N.,April 14. Miss Parr was warmly welcomed byour student body.Miss Jean McCrandle, 06, who is teaching inAnderson, spent her spring vacation, March 27to 31, here, visiting old student friends.Prof. Bogardus went to Normal, 111., April8, on an invitation of the Faculty of the IllinoisState Normal University to address the FacultyClub. Prof. Bogardus is an Alumnus of theState Normal University.Mr. Fasset A. Cotton, until recently StateSuperintendent of Public Instruction, was avisitor of the Training School, April 15. Mr.Cotton has been made the President of the newState Normal School, at Lacrosse, Wis. Hewas accompanied by Mr. W. H. Sanders, 88,Superintendent of the Bloomington schools,who will go to Lacrosse next year to take chargeof the Methods and Practice Department.Mr. Fred Spencer, 08, was a visitor April16. Mr. Spencer is Principal of the BellmoreHigh School.Prof. Engleman delivered the Commencement address at Pine Village, April 24.Mr. Edgar Webb, 11, called on I. S. N. April16. Mr. Webb is farming this spring.Messrs. Christopher Cauble, 08, and GuyJohnson, 11, renewed acquaintances at I. S. N.April 18.Prof. Mutterer attended the Grand Opera,Parsifal, in Chicago, April 18.Mr. A. M. Winklepleck, 07, who is Superintendent of Mt. Ayr schools, visited us April 19.Mr. Donald Wallace, a student of the JamesMillikin University, was a visitor at Normal,March 24, the guest of Mr. W. O. Winkler.Mr. Harmon Whitesett, 08, who is teachingManual Training at East Chicago, was a welcome visitor, April 3.Our students were addressed April 5, byPresident Morrill of the State Normal at NewHaven, Conn. Mr. Morrill had been attending the meeting of the States Teachers Association at Indianapolis. He said that the demand for trained teachers is growing rapidly.At no time are the four Normal Schools of Connecticut able to supply the demand for scientific teachers, he declared, In that small state |
