Description: 98THE NORMAL ADVANCESpecial AnnouncementCLASSES WILL BE ORGANIZED MAY 17, 1909, TO MEET THE NEEDS OF HIGHSCHOOL GRADUATESThe law enacted by the General Assemblyof 1907 dividing all public school teachers ofthe State into four classes, namely, Classes A,B, and C and teachers of rural and townschools, provides further, that, after August1, 1908, no new teacher shall enter the schoolswho has not had at least twelve weeks work ina school maintaining a professional course forthe training of teachers. Many persons wishing to teach during theschool year beginning September, 1909, willgraduate from high schools several weeks afterthe spring term of the State Normal Schoolhas opened—too late to do this terms work, and thus be qualified under the law to teach. If such persons were obliged to wait until theopening of the summer term before taking upthe professional work needed, it would be difficult, on account of the limited time and theexcessive heat of the season, to meet the requirements of the law..A further difficulty would be the impracticability of maintaining an efficient system oftraining schools during the month of Augustand the first part of September. To meet theneeds of this class of persons wishing to preparefor teaching at the opening of the school year inSeptember, 1909, the State Normal School willorganize new classes about the middle of itsspring term—May 17th—in Manual Training,Music, Drawing, Observation, Methods, Educational Psychology, and whatever other subjects may be necessary to afford the professional and academic training required by thesepersons. These classes will work during theremaining half of the spring term and continue as thus organized through the six weekssummer term, thus giving the twelve weeksprofessional training required by law. Theregular training schools, consisting of a ruralschool, the eight grades and the high school, will all be in regular session during the lasthalf of the spring term, and during the summer term following, the training school asheretofore organized for summer work will bemaintained. As stated above, this special arrangementwill be made to meet the needs of persons justgraduating from high schools and wishing todo the required amount of professional workbefore taking up the work of teaching in September. But the attendance will not be limitedto such graduates. Other persons wishing towork during this period will be given the benefit of this arrangement of classes so far as suchclasses will enable them to do profitable workin the school.Between 500 and 600 high school graduatestook advantage of this opportunity in thespring of 1908, and it is presumed that anequally large number will be in attendance inthe coming spring term. That the school maymake adequate provision for this large numberof high school graduates, it is desired that allpersons expecting to enter the mid-springclasses will give notice of such intention. All those interested should address PresidentW. W. Parsons, State Normal School, TerreHaute, Ind.
