Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCEALMA BESTE.Miss Alma Beste died at Walkers Sanitarium in Evansville on the fourth of lastAugust, after an illness of a week.Miss Beste was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana,on July 15, 1878. She was a graduate of thepublic schools of Mt. Vernon in the class of1895, and was a teacher for a year or two inMISS ALMA BESTEthe same schools. After her graduation fromthe Indiana State Normal School in the classof 1903, she became a member of the Faculty ofthe State Normal Training School. This position she held until her death.Of her it is literally true thatNone knew her but to love her,None named her but to praise.CYRUS W. HOD GIN.On October 3, 1908, occurred the death ofCyrus W. Hodgin, one of the first instructorsin the Indiana State Normal School. Professor Hodgin held the chair of History andPolitical Economy in Earlham College atRichmond, Ind., at the time of his death, andwas exceedingly well known as an educator ofthe highest type.He began his career as a teacher in 1861, andhe taught in private and public schools of theState until 1872, when he became Professorof History in our own school. He resigned in1881 and did high school and Normal Schoolwork until 1887 when he became an instructorin Earlham College.During his life he lectured a great deal oneducational topics, temperance and peace arbitration. He was also author of several historical works and was considered an authorityon the history of our own State, contributingto the leading works in the United States.Professor Hodgin was well known to manyof our former students and to most of ourFaculty and we extend our sympathy to theFaculty and student body of Earlham Collegein their bereavement at the loss of such aworthy man and efficient scholar, whom wehave always considered as one of the foundersof our great institution.mm
