Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCEThe Training School DepartmentJ. O. ENGLEMANAs the training school is an integral part ofthe Normal School, it, too, began the work ofthe new year Friday, September 25. With butfew exceptions, the pupils who were in theschool last year were back again to enroll onthe opening day. Of course a new first yearclass was admitted in the grades and the classWALTER H. WOODROWof eighth year pupils admitted into the highschool was increased to forty by taking in newstudents who had made formal application forsuch places earlier in the year. A total of sixty-two new pupils have been admitted from a listcontaining the names of more than two hundred applicants for places. The school now hasan enrollment of two hundred forty-three,ninety-nine of whom are in the high school.Miss Edith Bader again has charge of gradesthree and four

MissRose Cox, German, and Mr. Engleman, Latin.The latter also has the principalship of theentire training school.During the summer vacation the school wasshocked by the sudden death of Miss AlmaBeste, who had charge of grades one and two.Her place is filled by Miss Alice Woody. MissKate Moran, now doing graduate work inColumbia University, is succeeded by MissJessie B. Montgomery, in charge of gradesseven and eight. The growth of the high schooland addition of a third year to its course madeit necessary to secure one more high schoolteacher, and Mr. Walter Woodrow was chosento have charge of the departments of Mathematics and Science.Mr. Woodrow is a Clay County boy and inthat county he received his early training andenjoyed a seven years experience in countryschool teaching. He graduated in the NormalSchool in 1907, and was one of the first classof four to receive a Bachelors degree onfinishing our College Course in June, 1908. HeMISS ALICE WOODYhas also taught three years in the city schoolsof Brazil and served as laboratory assistant inthe Department of Biology while pursuing hisCollege Course last year.Miss Montgomery is a Normal graduate ofthe class of 95.
