It is both a science and an art. As a science its object is to give a knowledge of the principles of sentence construction as an art it seeks to give skill in interpreting and in constructing sentences. This two-fold nature and end of the subject must be kept con¬ stantly before the mind of the pupil. The first may be acquired by the study of text-book statements of the principles the sec¬ ond must be sought through intelligent practice in the analysis of sentences, and through unceasing endeavor to express his own thoughts in the best sentence forms.COMPOSITION.I.
