Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE153UtterarpALETHENAI.* I kHE meetings of the Alethenai Literary
■*■ Society for the past month have been a
continuation of the study of the lives and works
of prominent English authors. An especially
interesting program was that given on Satur¬
day, March 7, which was Browning Day.The society dispensed with the regular meet¬
ing, and attended the Kipling meeting, given
by the Philomathean Society, which proved to
be most interesting as well as instructive.Elaborate preparations are being made for
the annual Alethenai banquet, to be held April
4th, at the Elks Club.Miss Esther Westbrook, a former Alethenai,
was visiting society friends during the week of
March 1st.the spring term. Many old men will be back
to entertain and inspire the society with wit
and wisdom on that occasion.CICERONIAN.The Ciceronian Debating Society held its
annual outlook meeting Thursday evening, Feb¬
ruary 26. The relations of the society with
other societies of the school, history of the so¬
ciety, ideals of the society, future of the society,
and such dear old institutions as the annual
camp and banquet were discussed with a great
deal of spirit. The society gives but this one
night in the year to the joys of contemplating
the glories of the society
all other regular
meetings are strictly limited to debates and
necessary business. Recent debates have been
spirited and are developing considerable ca¬
pacity in the newer men. The older fellows are
digging to keep up.The annual banquet is in the hands of several
competent committees, and will be one of the
most enthusiastic ever held. As usual, it is
scheduled for the last Saturday evening ofDAEDALIAN.The meeting of February 14 was made a
special Lincoln day occasion. The program
closed with a Lincoln anecdote from each mem¬
ber. The following week a Washington pro¬
gram was carried through. Remembering the
scripture verse about all work and no play, the
program committee rang on a comic debate, and
six members are now entangled in the intrica¬
cies of the momentous questions, Should re¬
peated violations of the Deans 10 oclock rule
disqualify for Daedalian membership? The
argumentative mystification is to be staged at
the meeting of March 14, and so the truth of
the matter is not yet known. On Friday evening of February 27, an in¬
door picnic was given in the association rooms.
The social committee, consisting of Wright,
Hemmer and Sigler had planned well, and a
very pleasant evening was the result. An in¬
door snipe hunt was one of the interesting fea¬
tures. The guests of the society were the
Misses Anna Cox, Provines, Thompson, Rippe¬
toe, Burkett, McCombs, Glover, McKamey, Zell,
Jones, Smith and Casey and Mrs. Limp.Mr. K. S. Mitchell of New London was a
visitor on March LH. C. Martin, a charter member of the society,
is spending the winter in New Mexico. He will
not resume his teaching in Indiana until after
the Panama Exposition.R. J. Reece is serving as principal at Hardins-
burg. He will return to school in the summer
term.
