A blue and white enamelled metal sign stating the meaning of the bell signals used by coal mines to warn miners and operators. Code of Signals: An act approved February, 1905. There shall be a code of signals at all mines with a signal bell at the top and bottom of each mine. One bell shall signify to hoist --- or empty cage, and also to --- either when in motion. Two bells shall signify that men are coming up. When return signal is received from the engineer, men will get on the cage and ring one bell to hoist. Four bells shall signify to hoist slowly, implying danger. The engineers signal for men to get on cage shall be three bells. A whistle may be used at the top of the mines instead of a bell. |
