ULISAugust 11th., 1927.Mrs. Frank E. Hering 919 E. Jefferson Blvd.,South Bend, IndianaDear Mrs. Hering: The Executive Committee of the Booker T. Washington Community Service in meeting assembled note with a great deal of interest your gradual improvement in health. Though gradual, we are all pleased that we do entertain the hope that this improvement will be continuous until you are your real self again. We appreciate the genuine interest you have manifested in the development of a substantial Colored citizenry in South Bend, and thank you for the great school, Hering-House, which you have made possible for their instruction. True it is that education is necessarily slow and painstaking, and the pupil seldom appreciates the teacher until after graduation, yet, Mrs. Hering we know that the dawn of a new day for the Colored people of South Bend came with the establishment of Hering House. We are backing the program for maintaining high standards for the Race, self-improvement and the sharing of community responsibilities by Colored people. We believe in Race Pride so strongly that we are teaching Negroes everywhere that they should be as proud of being black as other people are of being white. The committee recognizes the fact that this will cost much in finance, sacrifice and patience. It joins you in faith, believing that we are on the right track, and are determined to bring about adjustments for permanent results. With kindly remembrances to Mr. Hering, we continue in prayer with the hope for your speedy recovery and remain,Your grateful friends,Carrie B. Ulis, Pres.
