Description:	Art work by George Winter. Bishop Brute preaching to a concourse of connected Pottawattamie Indians near Logansport Indiana Augst. 16th. 1838 (written in ink, lower right). Inscribed, lower right: G. Winter (in ink); upper right: #65 (in red ink); verso, lower right: Bishop Bruit preaching to the Indians at near Logansport 1838 Aug 16 (in pencil). 3 sheets glued together; center section separated at middle fold and at upper margin. Large group of figures in wooded area, most seated, some standing; one man astride horse. In center of scene, many persons seated on ground, facing a lean-to with fabric hung over vertical and horizontal supports, sheltering five men (three in clerical garb, two in Indian attire), apparently standing on raised platform. In background, numerous campsites with tents, cooking pots suspended from forked uprights; also horses grazing. Womens clothing includes decorated cape-like collars, skirts, shawls worn over head or shoulders, blankets, moccasins, cone earbobs, multi-strand necklaces, hourglass-shaped hair bows. Mens clothing includes ruffled and plain shirts, vest, blanket (one belted), double-breasted coat, sashes from shoulders, winged leggings, turbans (some with patterned tails, peaked fronts, or hair roaches), headbands with hair roaches, queues tied with ribbon bows; ear wheels suspended from long loops.
