William Wells

Description: Wm Wells (in Cable Balls handwriting; probably c. 1918-1920) AMs, 1 p. (written in pencil)
Wells was captured by the Miamis in Kentucky at the age of eleven and was adopted by Little Turtle. He became an interpreter, married a sister of Little Turtle, and eventually joined General Waynes army as captain of the spies. He was granted a large area of land near Fort Wayne, and his son Wayne Wells was a West Point graduate. William Wells was Indian agent at Fort Wayne in 1812 and was killed in that year in the defense of Fort Dearborn. His killers cut out and ate his heart in order to acquire his bravery.
