Scene along New Albany riverfront: description of area is written below by the photographer.Sherman Minton Bridge in background; towers of Gallagher Station are downriver. See also #44 and #46Sherman Grose is shown holding up the anchor rings near New Albanys boat ramp. These rings were used by the steamboats that unloaded the wood, cotton and steel in New Albanys past. Some of the anchor rings may have been taken by looters, two of the other photos show the hand laid stones still lie buried under the food wall, all the way up to Main St. and Sherman Minton Bridge in background shows some of the stones missing, as if the were taken from the river bank to use elsewhere? Another sad example of looters. These stones can be seen best during late fall or in the spring. Other steamboat anchor rings may be present besides one set shown that Sherman Grose is holding up. |
