Description: |
An African American couple sitting on the front porch of a house. The woman is wearing a polka dot dress and white apron. The man is wearing a suit and hat. A grape arbor is visible in the background. Identified as Jerry and Rebecca Cotterall or Cotrill. In 1900, they lived on Fawcett Street. This is likely the same house. Jerry, a farmer, was born in 1834. Rebecca was born in 1843. An accompanying note from the donor reads as follows. My stepfather, David Franklin Crosier, was white and often talked about the Cotteralls who were so good to him when he was a youngster. He was born in New Albany, I think, around 1897. He spent most of his business life in New York City and retired to Southbury, Connecticut where he died. He loved this picture and it was always on a wall wherever he lived. |
