Description: |
View looking northwest toward the southwest corner of North Meridian and West New York Streets. The Marion Club, a Republican club, moved into the building with the columns in 1898. The church with two spires was the Meridian Street Methodist Episcopal Church, occupying this location from the time of construction in 1869 until it was destroyed by fire in November 1904.The Marion Club purchased their building, an Italianate style house (designed by architect Diedrich Bohlen in about 1862-1863 for Vinton), in July 1897 from the Supreme Lodge, Order of Equity. They added a colonial front, consisting of two-story columns, before occupying the clubhouse in November 1897. The building to the left was originally the Vajen house, built in the early 1860s. This photo post-dates 1898 when a 3rd-story was added to the oldVajen house. |
