This booklet was created by Railroadmens Federal Savings and Loan Association, reprinting a series first published in their magazine Home Life in 1954. The individual pages have been cataloged and are numbered ia-0001-1806 through ia-0001-1817.According to Ben Ross, Ames-Roache-Jameson House (1854/1903-1905). The house at what became 1035 N. Pennsylvania Street was built in 1854 for Edward Raymond Ames (1806-1879), bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The propertyextended from Pennsylvania to Delaware Streets and from roughly todays10th to 14th Streets. In 1863, Ames sold the house to Judge Addison LockeRoache Sr. (1817-1906). Roache subdivided the property around the houseinto two additions and sold the northern part of the property to Elijah B.Martindale, who laid out an addition in 1867. In 1902, Roache sold thehouse to attorney Ovid Butler Jameson (1854-1915), grandson of Ovid Butler,and his wife, Mary Booth (Tarkington) Jameson (1865-1937), sister of thenovelist Booth Tarkington and an acquaintance of Mary Lord Harrison.Between 1903-1905, the house underwent an extensive remodeling, adding anIonic-columned portico and pediment, an entry portico with side terraces,and lavish interior finishes and details reflecting Mary TarkingtonJamesons tastes. The house featured a Neoclassical center hall, a LouisXIV drawing room in yellow and gilt, Colonial Revival library, and a GothicRevival dining room. Mary Tarkington Jameson named the house BarleyBright II, after her friend James Whitcomb Rileys nickname for herparents house at 1100 N. Pennsylvania Street. Mary Tarkington Jamesondied in May 1937 and the houses furniture was sold off in October 1937.The house was occupied by antiques dealers until 1944 before becoming anoffice building known as the I. W. Cotton Building. The house wasdemolished in 1955 and the site remains a surface parking lot as of 2019. |
