According to the labs National Register of Historic Places nomination, architect Robert Frost Daggett designed the Spanish Revival-style structure that was built in 1913-1914 to manufacture antitoxins, serums, vaccines and other medicines for diseases such as dipheria, smallpox, scarlet fever, rabies, tetanus, and influenza. The tower was flanked by stalls that held innoculated horses and other animals whose blood serum was used for treatment and other research. |
